From New Year’s and Martin’s to Presidents’ and Patrick’s,
Ash on to Easter plus Halloween theatrics,
Memorial Day, Flag Day and the Fourth in a row,
One holiday to the next, a-dashing we go.
Labor and Veteran’s Days, All Souls and All Saints,
From all the festivities I’m getting the faints.
Mother’s and Father’s Days, to a birthday or wedding,
Sometimes I wonder to what next I’m heading.
We’ve Cinco de Mayo, Columbus and Valentine;
They’re more reasons to party, and more times to dine.
With the aroma of Thanksgiving still yet to wane
The thought of the next feast is creating a pain.
It is celebrating Christmas the young ones await,
But in the holiday race I am still at the gate.
Galas upon festivals, have we lost all reason?
Why Do We Call Christmas “The Holiday Season”?
If I sound like I’m Scrooging, bah humbugging you’d say
Then accept my apologies for starting this way.
It’s been a year full of joy, from beginning ‘til now
From Lang Syning to fireworks to trimming the bough.
I've just come to wonder about much of the jolly
With all the celebrating that's become folly.
Our culture obsesses with observing the season,
But is less mindful of the real Christmas reason.
For the birth of a child are the songs we are hearing;
The Advent season is the why of our cheering.
Since the coming of Jesus created all the great fuss;
To keep Christ in Christmas is my counsel to us.
An Advent Alleluia to All
